Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Team World Championships (posted on June 29)

The Triathlon Team World Championships were held in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday June 27th.  The race consisted of a team of two male and two female members with each athlete doing a 250m swim, 6.6K cycle, and a 1.6K run.  The members of Canada Team III were Kyla Coates and Jeff Phillips of Victoria, BC, Connor Hammond of London, Ont, and Winnipeg’s Sarah-Anne Brault. Sarah's team placed 13th out of 16 teams with a time of 1:26:08. Sarah was the 7th fastest of 16 female athletes doing the 3rd leg of the relay. Sarah’s time for the race was 22:24. Defending Olympic Champion Emma Snowsill raced the 3rd leg for Australia, the winning team, in a time of 21:11. Gary Pallett says, "What makes Sarah’s result even more impressive is she did the bike solo, whereas some of the athletes had athletes around them and were able to draft."

2009 Oklahoma PATCO Triathlon Pan American Championships (posted May 17th)

Congratulations to the following Triathlon Manitoba athletes competing at the 2009 Oklahoma PATCO Triathlon Pan American Championships on Saturday May 16th.

18/41    Stevie Moore      1:10:26   12:22   34:31   21:12

At about 14km, Mark Okany caught wheels with another Canadian rider and went down.  Fortunately he wasn't seriously hurt, but his race was over. The roads were very poor resulting in a number of bike crashes.  Unfortunately, the results didn't give split times for athletes who completed only part of the event, so we have no split times for Mark.  Josh lost his timing chip in the swim, so there are no split times for him either.

Musselman Triathlon by Gary Pallett (posted July 14th)

Sarah-Anne Brault competed at her first Senior Elite Event -- the Continental Cup race in Geneva New York on Saturday July 12th. The women’s field was very small, 9 athletes, but had a number of very talented athletes competing including 3 Olympians. 2008 Olympians Kathy Trembley (Canada), Julie Ertel (USA) and 2004 Australian Maxine Seear (she was selected in 2004 over 2003 World Champion Emma Snowsill). Sarah had the best swim of her life, and came out of the water in second place only 2 seconds behind Kathy Trembley. She then made the lead group of 4 with Trembley, Ertel and Alycia Kaye from Canada. She managed to stay and do her share of work in the pack but the long cycle pretty much fried her for the 10 km run ahead. That, combined with the 33 degree temperature, made it a very long run for Sarah, but she was able to maintain a lead over the rest of the field. The 4th place effort won Sarah $1500 in prize money so was well worth a lot of suffering. I think the result will give Sarah a lot of confidence to head into senior racing almost full time next year (we still need her for the Canada Games).

Here are the results and a story on the ITU website.

Because of the cold weather and a water temperature of just 12.5 degrees, the swim portion was shortened to 1100m. The final age-group wave to enter the water was the 45-49 women and 50-54 women. Every wave after that was turned into a duathlon consisting of a 3-kilometer run, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run. The affected waves were all women over 55 and all men.

Both Sarah-Anne and Blair proved they could run competitively at the international level as Sarah had the 5th fastest female run, and Blair the 10th fastest male run."

Coach Gary Pallett writes:
Sarah-Anne got another silver medal at a Canadian Championships today. She had a great swim and made the lead pack of 7 on the bike. In the run she got out-run by Kathy Tremblay (who won the Pan American Sprint Championships, and was 3rd in the Mazatlan World Cup earlier this year). It was another amazing accomplishment considering this was only her 2nd sprint triathlon ever.

Manitoba results from the Canadian Elite Triathlon Championships in Victoria on June 9th
by Gary Pallett  (updated on July 3, 2003)

What do you call it when you get the 80 fittest male and female athletes in the country together? The Canadian Elite Triathlon Championships.

Making the jump from racing provincially to racing against the defending Olympic Gold Medallist Simon Whitfield is like a novice cyclist competing in the Tour de France against Lance Armstrong. In such a situation it's hard not to feel like a deer in the headlights -- everything around you seems so fast, and it's hard to be confident when you've never raced with triathletes of Olympic calibre before. This is what the Manitoba team faced this past weekend.

Although no one on the team was happy with their final results, the race was a great learning experience for all who attended, and will serve as a stepping stone to racing with World Class competition in the future. Many athletes on our team are very young and inexperienced, and part of their development will include good and not-so-good races. As long as we learn from all of the experiences, they are all worthwhile.

Manitoba results from the Apple Duathlon in Sartell Minnesota  by Gary Pallett  (updared on June 6, 2003)

Erica Stechesen was the overall top female finisher at the USA Midwest Duathlon Championships / USA World Duathlon Qualifier (Apple Duathlon) in a time of 2:11:13 on Saturday. Her splits were: 38:51 10K run / 1:11:05 42K bike / 19:51 5K run. The second place woman finished 34 seconds behind.

Our Namibian athlete Charmaine Shannon also raced very well, placing 12th of the 70 female finishers in a time of 2:21:45.

We also sent down 5 junior girls to get some experience racing in a stronger field. They all did well overall, and great considering they were the 5 youngest athletes in the race. The girls usually race over the 5K run / 20K bike / 2.5K run distance, so it was an interesting challenge for them to race at double the distance.

Here are all the results. Take a look at the juniors' transition times -- they are smoking fast.

by Jerry MacNeil

Minnesota masters Jan Guenther, 44, and Derek Hager, 42, turned in stunning efforts at the 21st Apple Duathlon on May 31. Guenther, who won this race in course record time in 2002, finished second this time around. Her 2:11:47 was only 34 seconds off the time recorded by Winnepeg (sic), Manitoba's formidable Erica Stechesen, who is undefeated in duathlon action (4 for 4) thus far in 2003.

The following athletes set divisional records at the Apple Duathlon Worlds Qualifier on May 31: Erin Braun, 18, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Jan Tripp, 50, of Laytonsville, MD, Don Ardell, 65, of Tampa, FL and Al Treichel, 74, of Spring Hill, FL.

Braun's 2:20:37 lowered the junior women's CR by a hefty 8:12.

Flawlessly produced, the Apple Duathlon served as a Team USA qualifier for the 2003 World Du Champs in Alferton, Switzerland in late August. It was also the second race of the 10-event Midwest Multisport Series.

2002 High Performance Athletes

Triathlon nominees recognized at the 18th Annual Sport Manitoba Awards (posted on April 15, 2003)

Jacques Marcoux and Amy Briscoe were nominated by Triathlon Manitoba's Board of Directors for Manitoba Youth Athletes of the Year at the 18th Annual Sport Manitoba Awards Evening on April 11th.

Jacques was Triathlon Manitoba's Male Junior Triathlete of the Year for 2002, and was recognized by the Manitoba High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) as Athlete of the Week in March of 2002.  He competed at both Junior and Duathlon Nationals for Manitoba.  A very talented athlete, he was also a member of the MHSAA Provincial graduating all-star basketball team, and competed for the U of M cross-country running team.

Amy shone in the two biggest races of the season, where she was the top Manitoban, placing 6th at Junior Nationals and winning the Junior race at Duathlon Nationals (for the second straight year).  Amy was Triathlon Manitoba’s Female Junior Triathlete of the Year for 2002.  This is a difficult category to win, as there are many talented athletes in this category.
