2001 Junior Team Athletes

2001 Provincial Junior Team

These athletes met junior/youth, male/female, Elite/A/B time standards in qualifying races during the 2001 season.

Juniors (ages 17 to 19) race at Olympic Distance (1500m swim, 40K bike, 10K run).
The 2001 Canadian Junior Triathlon Championships were held at Birds Hill Park on June 9th.   That was the first race of the season, so there weren't any qualifying races, but two Male athletes and five Female Youth athletes raced in that event with four of the Female Youth completing it.

Also, Kevin Breiter and Erin Braun were part of the 2001 Canadian National Age Group Triathlon Team that competed at the 2001 ITU Triathlon World Championships in Edmonton on July 21st.

Finally, Kevin, Erin, and Amy Briscoe competed as Junior Elites at the 2001 Canadian Duathlon Championships in St Albert Alberta on August 6th --- Kevin was crowned as the male 2001 Canadian Duathlon Champion, and he will compete for Canada at the 2001 World Duathlon Championships in Rimini Italy on September 16th. See Duathlon.

Youth (ages 13 to 16) race at Sprint Distance (750m swim, 20K bike, 5K run), and had five qualifying races prior to 2001 Junior/Youth Regionals at Duck Mountain Saskatchewan on August 5th.  The team that represented Manitoba at that event consisted of Kara Foley, Jill Dobrinsky, Steve Budowski, and Erich Krzysztofik.

The documented criteria to choose the Provincial Junior Team is quite strict, but in 2001 there were many outstanding athletes and performances, so the Team was chosen based on a combination of the following criteria:

Name Club / Home 2001 Triathlon Age Time Standard
Kevin Breiter Triple Threat / Transcona 19 (1981) Junior Male Elite
Erin Braun Triple Threat / Fort Richmond 15 (1985) Junior Female B / Youth Female A

Amy Briscoe

Triple Threat / Fort Richmond 14 (1986) Junior Female B / Youth Female A
Jacques Marcoux Triple Threat / St Boniface 16 (1984) Junior Male B / Youth Male A
Kara Foley Westman Triumphs / Brandon 15 (1985) Youth Female A
Steve Budowski West Kildonan 15 (1985) Youth Male A
Justin Campbell Triple Threat / Transcona 14 (1986) Youth Male A
Jill Dobrinsky Triple Threat / West Kildonan 14 (1986) Youth Female A

Manitoba again wins the Markham Cup at Junior/Youth Regionals (posted on August 6, 2001)

For the 5th year in a row, Triathlon Manitoba's Provincial Junior Team has captured the Markham Cup.  The Manitoba/Saskatchewan Junior/Youth Regional Championships were held yesterday at Duck Mountain Saskatchewan.

Kara Foley of Brandon was the overall Female Standard Distance race winner in a time of 2:47:16.  Kara raced as a Junior (age 17 to 19) at Standard Distance even though she is Youth-aged (15).

Steve Budowski of Winnipeg was the overall Male Sprint Distance race winner in a time of 1:12:25.  Erich Krzysztofik of Winnipeg finished 2nd behind Steve in the Male Youth Sprint category (ages 16 and under) at 1:14:41, and Kyle Crowston (11) also competed in that category.

Jill Dobrinsky of Winnipeg was first in the Female Youth Sprint category race winner in a time of 1:18:41. Karla-Rae Buga of Brandon was also on the podium in that category.

Coach David Markham is very proud of his team.

A successful Canadian Junior Triathlon Championships (posted on June 10, 2001)

Congratulations to the Triple Threat Triathlon Club for staging an excellent Canadian Junior Triathlon Championships (and Triple Threat Triathlon) at a hot Birds Hill Park yesterday.  Thanks to all the athletes, parents, administrators, and volunteers who contributed to the success of the event.

Seven of our Junior and Youth athletes tackled their first Standard Distance triathlon yesterday.

Jacques Marcoux and Brent Miller completed the Standard event in the Triple Threat Triathlon.

All five girls (Erin Braun, Amy Briscoe, Carolyn Wernham, Jill Dobrinsky, and Courtney Gilchrist) did their first Standard Distance triathlon by racing Junior Elite in the Canadian Junior Triathlon Championships.  For Carolyn, it was her first triathlon ever.  Erin finished 8th, so she will be representing Canada at the World Triathlon Championships in Edmonton on July 21st.   Amy finished 9th which would also qualify her, but it looks like her age (only 15 on the date of Worlds) may preclude her from being named to the Canadian Team.

Kevin Breiter and Corey Kolbuck also raced Junior Elite.  This was only Corey's second Standard Distance triathlon ever. Kevin had a very unfortunate and disappointing day.   He was a pre-race favorite, but had to withdraw from the race with a broken rear derailleur.
