October 18, 2000 --- 2001 Canadian Junior Triathlon Championships
Triathlon
Manitoba is pleased to announce that the Triple Threat Triathlon Club will be hosting the 2001
Canadian Junior Triathlon Championships at Birds Hill Park on June 9th
& 10th, 2001. This event is a
qualifier for Canada's best junior triathletes aged 17 to 19 to represent Canada at the World
Triathlon Championships in Edmonton Alberta on July 21st and 22nd. Manitoba's own Kevin Breiter won the bronze
medal at the 2000 Canadian Junior Triathlon Championships. He is training hard for his last year racing as a
junior, and hopes the home turf advantage will aid in his quest for a gold medal in 2001.
The Triple Threat Triathlon Club will host the event, and it is sanctioned by Triathlon Manitoba, the sport governing body for the sport of triathlon in Manitoba, and Triathlon Canada the national governing body for triathlon. Competitors will be treated to the world-class triathlon facilities at Birds Hill Provincial Park, specially designed to host the 1999 Pan American Games Triathlon in Winnipeg.
The weekend
race format will include Elite Junior Male and Elite Junior Female draft-legal Standard
Distance races, and a Standard Distance no-drafting age-group race for anyone ready for
the 1500m swim, 40km cycle, 10km run challenge. A
Sprint Distance race, at half Standard Distance, will provide the showdown for the Manitoba
High School Championship where individuals and teams of high school age attain
performance points in an attempt to give their school bragging rights for a year. A Duathlon, the landlubbers triathlon, will follow
a 5km run, 40km cycle, 10km run course to round out the events offered on the weekend.
While the highlight of the weekend is the Canadian Junior Triathlon Championship, all triathletes and duathletes are encouraged to get involved in the fitness festivities. If you are new to the sport, sign up for the Sprint Distance event, and come out and "tri" it.
With the
inception of the Manitoba - National Triathlon Centre on October 1, 2000, the
development opportunities are sure to benefit our juniors, and we expect great
performances from this young group of athletes at this event.
