August 20, 2001 --- Riding Mountain Triathlon Results
Triathlon Manitoba and Hot 101 FM in Brandon are pleased to announce the success of the
2001 Riding Mountain Triathlon in Clear Lake, Wasagaming, Manitoba, on Saturday August
18th. This was the sixteenth year for the Riding Mountain Triathlon with the largest
number of participants this season, and a new Triathlon Manitoba record, at 251 racing
individuals. The race also had a record number of relays, with 27 teams participating in
the event, many trying the sport for the first time.
The overall male winner for the Standard distance triathlon (1500m swim, 40km bike, and
10km run) was the 2001 Canadian Duathlon Champion, Kevin Breiter with a time of 1:59:01.
Second place went to Patrick Peacock in 1:59:59, following in third was Allan Scott in
2:01:07.
The overall female winner was Erica Stechesen from the 3rd Wave club in Morden in 2:16:12.
Capturing second place was Janet Findlay from Kenora in 2:16:26, followed by Jenny Ayers
from the Tribalistic Team in 2:23:00.
In the Sprint distance category (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) the first place male was
Rob Vallis in 1:04:04 of the Tribalistic team. Following in second was the Tribe's
president, Marc Fournier in 1:07:37. Third place went to youth athlete and Triple Threat
member, Jacques Marcoux in 1:08:01.
On the women's side the overall top three winners were within a minute of each other. The
top placing sprint winner was youth athlete, Amy Briscoe from Triple Threat in 1:12:27.
Following closely in second was last year's winner Kim Gusdal in 1:12:54. Third place went
to youth athlete Jill Dobrinsky from Triple Threat in 1:12:59.
On Sunday, the Kids of Steel participants took to the water to complete their events.
Ninety-nine participants ages 8 - 16 competed in either the Junior distance (100m swim,
5km cycle, 1km run) or the Senior distance (200m swim, 10km cycle, 1km run), bringing the
weekend's participation numbers to a total of 350 people.
The overall Junior girls winner was Samantha Wauer of Oakbank in 19:49 and on the junior
boys side Fraser Drad of Stonewall won in 18:17. In the senior distance, Jill Dobrinsky of
Winnipeg was the girl's winner in 32:55, and Kyle Dudman from Erickson claimed first place
on the boy's side in 33:47.
Special thanks to Manitoba Public Insurance who came out to the Kids of Steel event
yesterday to promote bicycle safety and gave away bicycle helmets for prizes.
The final event in the Kids of Steel series takes place Sunday September 9th at Birds
Hill Provincial Park.
