July 17, 2001 --- Results of the Morden Triathlons


Triathlon Manitoba is pleased to announce the success of the past weekend's triathlons in Morden. The 21st Morden International Triathlon took place on Saturday July 14th. This is one of Canada's longest running triathlons. The race
featured a variety of distances with total participation numbers reaching 190 individuals.

The Half Ironman race featured a 1.9 km swim, 90km bike, followed by a 21.1km run. This portion of the race was a qualifier for Ironman Canada with 10 spots up for grabs and featured a $2000 prize purse for the top three overall male and female winners of the Half Ironman Distance.

The overall female winner was Erica Stechesen from the 3rd Wave Triathlon Club in Morden, in a time of 5:03:47. Following in second was Janet Findlay of Kenora in 5:14:42. Maureen Van Schepdael who traveled from Alberta finished in 5:34:19 to claim third place.

On the men's side David Ramsay claimed first place in 4:33:30. Closely behind in second was Philippe Chabot, from the Triple Threat Club in 4:35:14. Third place went to Tribalistic member, Dale Kirk in 4:36:00.

The second distance of the day was the Foilman race, which featured a 950 m swim, 30km bike, and 7.2km run. On the women's side, youth athlete Amy Briscoe, from the Triple Threat Club, won the event in 1:47:01. Kim Gusdal finished in 1:48:19 earning her the second position. Third place went to Cherrie Fournier from Tribalistic in 1:49:09.

Wayne Klassen, from Triple Threat won the men's Foilman event in 1:36:56. Second place went to junior athlete Jacques Marcoux, also of Triple Threat, in 1:37:24. Third place went to Marc Fournier from Tribalistic in 1:39:21.

The third event of the day was a Duathlon (3.6k run/ 30k cycle / 7.2k run). Trevor Funk, of the Sub 2 Club, placed first in 1:43:11. Just seconds behind was Ed Hoogerdyk in 1:43:21. Third place went to Brent MacDonald of the Westman Triumphs club in 1:56:28. On the women's side Allison Manning of the Triumphs placed first in 2:07:26

On the Sunday the Kids of Steel event ran with 66 kids, and shortly after, a Tri-a-Tri distance featuring a short 300m swim, 15km bike and 3km run was held with 21 participants. The overall winners for the junior Kids of Steel distance (100m swim/ 5k cycle /1k run) were Serena Bredin in 20:26 and Evan Mohr in 19:57. The senior distance (200m swim/ 10k cycle / 2k run)
winners were Jacqueline Coles in 37:39 and Erich Krzsztofik in 31:34. The overall Tri-a-Tri winners were Janna Young in 59:38 and Kyle Thiessen in 52:07.

The next race on the Triathlon Manitoba calendar is the Sandman Triathlon in Lac du Bonnet on Sunday July 29, 2001. The Lac du Bonnet Knights of Columbus, the Lac du Bonnet Youth Centre, and the Community Centre are presenting the event. The event features a Standard distance triathlon (1500m swim /40k bike / 10k run), a Sprint distance race (750m swim / 20k
bike / 5k run), and a Tri-a-Tri (300m swim. 10k bike, 2.5 k run), as well as a duathlon (5k run / 40k bike / 10k run). Registration forms can be printed off the website or by calling the office.
