June 11, 2001 --- Triple Threat Triathlon


Triathlon Manitoba is pleased to announce the success of the Triple Threat Triathlon held at Birds Hill Provincial Park on Saturday June 9, 2001 by the Triple Threat Triathlon Team, in conjunction with the 2001 Canadian Junior Triathlon Championships.

This race was the first triathlon of the season for adults/youths in the Grand Prix and Sprint Series, and also served as the Manitoba High School Championship. There were 117 participants plus the 46 junior elite racers.

The Overall Female winners of the Standard Distance (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) were as follows: in first place was Edie Fisher from Kenora, in 2:15:15. On her heels in second place was Cathy Dixon of Alberta in 2:15:30. Third place went to Janet Finlay, also from Kenora in 2:22:06.

The Overall Male winner in the Standard Distance was Allan Scott with the fastest age group time of the day in 2:02:29. Following in second Jeff Morier, from the Tribalistic team in 2:05:54. Third place went to fellow Tribe member, James Clement in 2:06:52.

In the Sprint Distance category (750 m swim / 20k bike / 5k run) the first women across the line was Corinne Elliott, from the Westman Triumphs Club in Brandon, in 1:34:13. Second place went to Barbara Roussel; a fellow Triumphs member in 1:35:31, following in third was Melanie Leclair of the Tribe in 1:36:53.

On the male side, David Matiece claimed top honors in a time of 1:21:27. Second placed went to Mark Lehmann in 1:23:16. Just behind him, was Ian Main from the Sub2 Club in 1:23:59.

A duathlon distance was also offered to participants with a 5k run, 40k bike and 10k run. The first place finisher was Kevin Miller from the hosting club, Triple Threat, in 2:20:44. Following in second was Derek Larson, a youth athlete in 2:31:58. Third place went to Herb Katz in 2:33:59.

Selkirk Regional Comprehensive School retained their titled as the Manitoba High Schools Championships again this year.

The next race on the Triathlon Calendar is a weekend of races in St Malo on June 23/24th. The weekend has events for everyone from Kids of Steel, to novice athletes with a shorter Tri-a-tri distance, to the Sprint, Standard, Duathlon and Master Swim categories.
