June 25, 2001 --- St Malo Triathlon Weekend Results
Triathlon Manitoba is pleased to announce the success of the triathlons held in St Malo
Provincial Park under the scorching weather over the weekend by the Tribalistic Triathlon
Team. Weekend participation in the events was at an all time high of 337 individuals. The
organization and race set-up by the Club was tremendous.
The Kids of Steel event for children ages 8 -16 years was held on Saturday June 23, 2001.
There were 102 participants in the event. The winner in the Junior Girl category (100m
swim, 5km bike, 1km run) was tied between Serena Bredin and Dianne Houle with times of
20:11. The Junior Boy who placed first was Evan Mohr in 18:45. In the Senior
Category (200m swim, 10km bike, 2km run) the first place girl was last year's champ,
Teresa Samek in 34:49, and the first place boy was Colin McKinley with a time of 34:00.
In the Try-a-Tri, a new distance for the weekend, which consisted of a 300m swim, 10km
bike, and 3km run, 21 participants, many first-timers to the sport, completed the event.
The Overall winner on the women's side was Christine Pearson from the hosting club in
45:39. Bryan Payne claimed the men's side in 39:06.
On Sunday June 24, 2001 the 6th Annual Triathlon de St Malo occurred, with a spectacular
turnout of 214 participants. Tribalistic members, Edie Fisher and Patrick Peacock repeated
their 2000 victories placing 1st overall for the third straight year.
The Overall Female winners of the Standard Distance (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) were
as follows: in first place was Edie Fisher in 2:18:29. Erica Stechesen captured second
place from the Third Wave club in Morden with a time of 2:21:43. Third place went to Jenny
Ayers in 2:28:49, also a member of the Tribalistic Team.
The Overall Male winners in the Standard Distance were all from the hosting club, 2000
Champion Patrick Peacock was first with the fastest time of the day in 2:05:42. Following
in second was Jeff Morier in 2:06:39. Third place went to Dave Lipchen in 2:08:55.
In the Sprint Distance category (750 m swim / 20k bike / 5k run) the youth women from the
Triple Threat Club swept the category. The first across the line was Erin Braun in
1:11:02. Second place went to Amy Briscoe in 1:14:15, following in third was Jill
Dobrinsky in 1:18:40.
On the male side, Rob Vallis from Tribalistic claimed top placing honors in a time of
1:04:27. Second placed went to Tribalistic President, Marc Fournier in 1:08:35. Youth
athlete Jacques Marcoux took third place, from the Triple Threat Triathlon Club in
1:09:56.
In the Duathlon event, which consisted of a 5k run, 40k bike, 10k run, Cameron Towle from Tribalistic placed first in 2:15:06. Steve Gajerski placed second in 2:24:25, followed by Kevin Miller in third place in 2:27:25. Both Steve and Kevin are members of the Triple Threat Club.
On the women's side, Faralee Shipley completed the event in 3:39:10.
The final events offered on the weekend were open water swims of either 750m or 1500m.
The overall 1500m female was Maria Donahue in 28:14 and the overall male was Kris
Hildebrand in 17:40. For the 750m swim Joy Goertzen from the Tribe placed first in 16:23
and Bob Murrell was first on the men's side in 19:07.
The next race on the Triathlon Calendar is the Tri Star Kids of Steel and Sprint Distance
Race in Southport, Manitoba on Saturday June 30, 2001. Along with this race a Junior
Development Camp weekend is being held for triathletes ages 12 - 17.
