July 15, 2002 --- Morden Triathlon Weekend Results
Despite the heat, 290 participants competed in the triathlon weekend, which
took place this past weekend in Morden. One of Canada's longest running triathlons, the 22nd Morden International Triathlon, started the weekend of
races on Saturday July 13th. The Morden Kids Of Steel race finished off the weekend on Sunday July 14th. This weekend of races included distances for
all ages and abilities.
The Half Ironman race featured a 1.9 km swim, 90km bike, followed by a 21.1 km run. This portion of the race was a qualifier for Ironman Canada with 10
spots up for grabs, and featured a $2000 prize purse for the top three overall male and female winners of the Half Ironman Distance.
The overall female winner was Edie Fisher with a time of 5:08:38. Edie traveled to Edmonton immediately following the race on Saturday to race at
the 2002 Canadian Triathlon Championship the following day where she also won her category and qualified for Worlds! In second place was Erica
Stechesen, in a time of 5:15:47. Janet Findlay of Kenora finished in 5:19:51 to claim third prize.
On the men's side Dan Morwood of Brandon claimed first place in 4:44:47. Closely behind in second was Darcy Harder,
from the Tribalistic Team in 4:55:31. Third place went to Triple Threat Triathlon club member, Philippe Chabot in
4:56:17.
The following Triathlon Manitoba members qualified at the event for Ironman Canada (3.9km swim, 180km bike, 42km run) in Penticton B.C. on August 25:
Edie Fisher, Janet Findlay, Carina Kirk, Darcy Harder, Rob Aiken and Sean
McKiernan.
The second distance of the day was the Foilman race, which featured a 950m swim, 30km bike, and 7.2km run. On the
women's side, youth athlete Erin Braun, from the Triple Threat Club, and training with the Manitoba National
Triathlon Centre (MNTC), won the event in 1:48:06. Marcia Migay finished second in 1:57:11. Third place went to Lisa Knudson who finished with a
time of 1:59:00.
Kevin Breiter, from Triple Threat, won the men's Foilman event in 1:29:32. Second place went to junior athlete Jacques Marcoux, also of Triple Threat,
in 1:40:55. Both Kevin and Jacques train with the MNTC. Third place went to Mark Lehmann in 1:41:58.
The third event of the day was a Duathlon (3.6k run/ 30k cycle / 7.2k run). Jason Loutitt placed first with a time of 1:33:39. Second place went to
Michael Klatt of the Triple Threat Triathlon Club in a time of 1:42:53. Third place went to Dan Stratton of the Tribalistic in 1:55:22.
On the Duathlon women's side, Christel Leclair placed first in 2:02:04. Second was Krista Kidd in 2:03:07. Third place went to Coreena Lloyd with a
time of 2:17:43.
On the Sunday, the Kids of Steel and Tri-a-Tri events were held. The overall winners for the Kids of Steel
8 to11 years (100m swim/ 5k cycle /1k run) were Jacqueline Coles in 22:35 and Ryan Smith in 21:55. The
12 to16 years "short"(200m swim/ 10k cycle / 2k run) winners were Sarah-Anne Brault in
38:30 and Romeo Zapata in 40:03. The12 to 16 years "long" (300m swim, 15km bike, 3km run) was won by Colin Simpson. The overall
Tri-a-Tri winners were Kate Riclefs in 1:01:09 and Clayton Pott in 1:02:03.
The next race on the Triathlon Manitoba calendar is the Southport Kids Of Steel and Tri-A-Tri on July 20th. The
following weekend the Lac du Bonnet Knights of Columbus, the Lac du Bonnet Youth Centre, and the Community Centre
are presenting the Sandman Triathlon in Lac du Bonnet. The event features a Standard distance triathlon (1500m swim
/ 40k bike / 10k run), a Sprint distance race (750m swim / 20k bike / 5k run), and a
Tri-a-Tri (300m swim / 10k bike / 2.5 k run), a Duathlon (5k run / 40k bike / 10k run) as well as a
Corporate Challenge Relay (Sprint triathlon distance). Registration forms can be printed off the website, or by calling the office.
