June 10, 2002 --- Triple Threat Triathlon Weekend Results


The Triple Threat Triathlon & Duathlon was held yesterday, June 9th at Birds Hill Provincial Park hosted by the Triple Threat Triathlon Team. The terrible weather didn't deter the 68 bold athletes who decided to stay and race regardless. This race was the first triathlon of the season for adults/youths in the Grand Prix and Sprint Series.

The Overall Female winners of the Olympic Distance event (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) were as follows: in first place was Edie Fisher from Kenora, in 2:36:06. In second place was Cherrie Fournier, from the Tribalistic Team in 2:49:04. Third place went to Corrine Elliott, from the Westman Triumphs Team in 2:55:55.

The Overall Male winner in the Standard Distance was Jeff Morier, in 2:15:05. Jeff is a member of the Tribalistic team and also trains with the Manitoba National Triathlon Centre (MNTC). Second place went to Philippe Chabot from the host club in 2:18:19. Philippe was also the race director the previous day for the Kids of Steel/School race. Third place went to Tribe member, Darcey Harder in 2:21:03.

In the Sprint Distance category (750 m swim / 20k bike / 5k run) the first woman across the line was Amy Briscoe, from the Triple Threat Team and training with the MNTC, in 1:16:45. Second place went to Lynne Laporte in 1:23:43. Following on her heels in third was Carolyn Wernham, in 1:23:45; (Triple Threat team/ MNTC).

On the male side, Jacques Marcoux (Triple Threat team/MNTC) claimed top honors in a time of 1:15:13. Second placed went to Triathlon Manitoba's President, Marc Fournier in 1:16:34. Behind him in third was Steven Budowski, from Triple Threat in 1:17:21.

A duathlon distance was also offered to participants with a 5k run, 40k bike and 10k run. The first place finisher was Kevin Miller from the hosting club, in 2:31:21. Following in second was Ray Papineau in 2:37:39. Third place went to Tibor Bodi in at 2:43:30.

The previous day, Saturday June 8th the Manitoba Schools Triathlon Championships/Kids of Steel event went on with 128 participants racing in the event that was also put on by the Triple Threat Club. Shamrock School claimed both the Early and Middle years' titles, while
Selkirk Regional Comprehensive School retained their titled as the Manitoba High Schools Champions again this year.

The next race on the Triathlon Events Calendar is a weekend of races in St Malo on June 22/23rd. The weekend has events for everyone from Kids of Steel, to novice athletes with a shorter Tri-a-tri distance, to the Sprint, Standard, Duathlon and Master Swim categories.
