June 24, 2002 --- St Malo Multisport Weekend Results
The St. Malo Multi Sport Weekend was held this past weekend, June 22 and
June 23, at St. Malo Provincial Park hosted by the Tribalistic Triathlon Team.
The Kids of Steel event for children ages 8 to16 years was held on the Saturday June 22, 2002. The rain and
thundershowers delayed the start but did not deter the 60 participants that stuck around in order to complete the
event. The winner in the Age 8 to 11 Girls category (100m swim, 5km bike, 1km run) was Jacqueline Coles with a time of 19:49.
Joshua Drad placed first in the boys 8 to 11year old category with a time of 21:06. In the 12
to 16 year old "Short" Category (200m swim, 10km bike, 2km run) the first place girl was Serena Bredin with a time of 38:36, and the first place
boy was Dana Bredin with a time of 37:43. The final distance was the Girls 12 to
16 year old "Long", (300m swim, 15km bike, 3km run) Samantha Wauer finished first with a time of 53:57.
Also on June 22 was the Try-a-Tri, a beginner distance for adults, consisting of a 300m swim, 15km bike, and 3km run. Ten
participants, many first-timers to the sport, completed the event. The Overall winner on the
women's side was Cindy Unger with a time of 1:06:36. Jon Gittoes claimed the men's side in 50:29.
On Sunday June 23, 2002 the 7th Annual St Malo Triathlon occurred, with a spectacular turnout of 218 participants. Tribalistic members, Edie Fisher
and Patrick Peacock repeated their 2001 victories placing 1st overall for the forth-straight year.
The Overall Female winners of the Standard Distance (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) were as follows: in first place was Edie Fisher, of the Kenora
Borealis Club, in 2:16:58. Jenny Ayers captured second place with a time of 2:31:01. Third place went to Carina Kirk in 2:31:17. Both Jenny and Carina
are members of the Tribalistic Triathlon Club.
The Overall Male winners in the Standard Distance consisted of 2001 Champion Patrick Peacock in first, with the fastest time of the day of 2:03:35. Following in second was Jeff Morier in 2:04:28. Patrick and Jeff are members of
the host club. Third place went to Allan Scott in 2:04:11. All three of these athletes train with the Manitoba National Triathlon Centre (MNTC).
In the Sprint Distance category (750 m swim / 20k bike / 5k run) the youth women from the Triple Threat Club swept the category, the first across the
line was Amy Briscoe in 1:11:18. Second place went to Erin Braun in 1:13:56; following in third was Teresa Samek in 1:15:20. All three of these
girls are currently training with the MNTC.
On the male side, Jacques Marcoux claimed top placing honors in a time of 1:07:50. Second place went to John Wernham with a time of 1:08:42. Jacques
and John are members of the Triple Threat club. Josh Markham took third place in 1:08:44. These three youth athletes are currently training with the
MNTC.
In the Long Duathlon event, which consisted of a 5k run, 40k bike, 10k run, Michael Klatt from Triple Threat placed first in 2:19:04. David Gerrard
finished second with a time of 2:22:26, and third was Warren Cook in 2:23:34.
A new event this year was the Sprint Duathlon, it consisted of a 2.5km run, 20km bike, 5km run. The first place female was Samantha Wauer with a time of
1:18:29. Second place was Kathy Osadczuk in 1:24:16. Sarah Markham finished third with a time of 1:32:25.
On the men's side Greg Penner finished first with a time of 1:08:05 followed closely by Layne Maciura at 1:08:09. Third place was Kevin Miller of the
Triple Threat Triathlon Club with a time of 1:08:41.
The final events offered on the weekend were open water swims of either 750m or 1500m. The overall 1500m female was
Susan Selby in 30:16 and the overall male was Rob McKinley in 27:02. For the 750m swim Kerrith Storey placed
first in 16:12.
The next race on the Triathlon Calendar is the Pinawa Kids Of Steel on July 6th and Free Spirit Triathlon and Duathlon in Pinawa, Manitoba on Sunday
July 7th, 2002.
