June 5, 2002 --- Triple Threat Triathlon Weekend


The Triple Threat Triathlon Team is hosting triathlon events this coming weekend at Birds Hill Provincial Park. All the action takes place in the East Beach area of the park.

Saturday June 8th is the second event in the 2002 Kids of Steel Series and will be serving as the Manitoba Schools Triathlon Championships race. Banners are given to the top Early, Middle Years and High Schools who earn the most race points. The defending champions from 2001 are Ecole St. Avila, River Heights School, and Lord Selkirk High School respectively. A Tri-a-Tri event for adults will also be offered.

This event is open to kids ages 8 and up. Distances are as follows:
8-11 years 100m swim, 5km cycle, 1km run
12-16 short 200m swim, 10km cycle, 2km run
12-16 long 300m swim, 15km cycle, 3km run
Adult Tri-a-Tri 300m swim, 15km cycle, 3km run

Registration is accepted onsite from 7:30-8:30am. with the race beginning at 9am.

The following day, Sunday June 9th, the action continues as the 1st races in the Manitoba Grand Prix and Sprint Series kick off. Manitoba's top triathletes will be trying to qualify for Triathlon Manitoba Junior and High Performance Traveling Teams.

The race distances for Sunday's events are as follows:
Sprint Distance Triathlon 750m swim / 20km cycle / 5km run
Standard Distance Triathlon 1500m swim / 40km cycle / 10km run
Duathlon 5km run / 40km cycle / 10km run

The Standard and Duathlon events begin at 8:00 a.m., with the sprint competitors beginning at 9:00 a.m. Registration is still being accepted up to 7:30 a.m. race morning. Access to and from the East Beach parking lot will be closed starting at 8:00a.m. until approximately 10:30 am, so spectators should park in the West Beach parking lot.
