May 16, 2002 --- Prestige Duathlon #2 Results


Kevin Breiter and Erica Stechesen win Prestige Duathlon #2

Race number 2 in the Prestige Duathlon Series took place on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at Birds Hill Park. It featured a short distance event - 2k run / 13k bike / 2k run or a long course - 4k run/ 24k bike/ 4k run, as well as a Kids of Steel distance. The long course event was one of the qualifying races for selecting the top overall male and female duathlete to represent Manitoba at the Canadian Duathlon Championships in Calgary, Alberta on September 8, 2002.

The overall male winner of the long distance duathlon was Kevin Breiter in 1:08:03. Following closely in second was Patrick Peacock, winner of Prestige Duathlon #1, in 1:08:40. Peacock and Breiter came off the first run only one second apart as they raced through transition onto their bikes. After the bike, Breiter came out in front with only a four second lead over Peacock. He managed to increase this lead on the final run to win the event. Retaining his third place position in the series was Darcey Harder from the Tribalistic team in 1:11:19.

The overall female winner of the long distance event was Erica Stechesen in 1:17:33. Jenny Ayers, from the Tribalistic triathlon team, place second in 1:23:59. Third place went to fellow Tribe member Cherrie Fournier in 1:27:58.

The overall male winner for the short distance event was Allan Scott in 36:34. Following in second was Rob Kazuk in 38:05. Third place went to Jacques Marcoux in 38:59.

The overall female winner for the short distance was youth athlete Amy Briscoe in 42:27. Lynne Laporte from StAlbert, Alberta was second in 43:52. Amy's Triple Threat teammate, Teresa Samek claimed third place in 45:03.

The Tuesday Night Series at Birds Hill Park is an excellent opportunity for novice athletes to familiarize themselves with the sport. Last night's event has a record duathlon turnout of 141 participants, many of whom were beginners in the sport. It's also a popular venue for the experienced to whip into triathlon race shape. New to the Series this year for runners, is 3 "run only" categories of a 2k, 6k, or 10k run course.

Each race starts at 6:30 PM with on-site registration taking place starting at 5:15 PM in the East Beach parking lot. Race #3 in the Prestige Duathlon Series takes place next Tuesday May 21st.
