October 29, 2002 --- Award Recipients


Triathlon Manitoba is pleased to announce our High Performance Award Winners for 2002.   This year’s awards were distributed at the 2002 Annual Awards Night that was held at Sport Manitoba on Saturday October 26th, in front of 120 members and guests.  High Performance Awards are given out each year to Triathlon Manitoba members who have excelled in their performances over the race season. 

Most Improved Triathlete

The top male and female triathletes who have shown the most improvement from one year to the next receive the most improved Triathlete award. 

Female

The Triathlon Manitoba Most Improved Female Triathlete for 2002: Kyra Labossiere 

Kyra is a member of the Tribalistic Team and in 2001participated in the Lac Du Bonnet and St Malo events. In 2002, Pinawa finished in 2:40, St Malo 2:46, and in Lac Du Bonnet  2:45. She showed an improvement at St Malo from 2:57 to 2:46 (11 minutes off), and at Lac du Bonnet from 3:04 to 2:45 (19 minutes off).  She place 2nd in the female 25-29 category in the Grand Prix Series this year.  

Male

The Triathlon Manitoba Most Improved Male Triathlete for 2002: Kris Hildebrand

From 1999 to 2000, Kris entered in several relays as the swimmer. Last year, he did his first Triathlon, the Morden Foilman in 2:27.  This year, Kris completed all seven events in the sprint series.  He completed the St.Malo Sprint in 1:34 finishing 3rd of 4. At Morden, he finished in 2:03 placing 3rd of 10 and took 24 minutes off his 2001 time. At the Lac du Bonnet Sprint, he went 1:23 placing 2nd of 13. 

Rookie of the Year for 2002

The top male and female triathletes who have shown the best performance in their first year of racing at the Sprint distance or longer are awarded the rookie of the year award. 

Female

The Triathlon Manitoba Female Rookie of the Year for 2002: Stacy Racher 

Stacy raced at the Olympic distance this year placing 1st in the 25-29 category at St Malo and Pinawa and was 3rd in Lac du Bonnet. She is the Grand Prix Female 25-29 age group winner.  In Morden she completed the Half-Ironman distance and is aiming to qualify for Ironman Canada in 2003. 

Stacy was also announced as the recipient of Triathlon Manitoba’s 2002 Scholarship.  

Male

The Triathlon Manitoba Male Rookie of the Year for 2002: Chris Picklyk 

Chris is a new athlete to the sport who trained with the Tribalistic triathlon team.  He showed tremendous dedication in attending practices and showed great improved from January through the season.   In St Malo, Chris finished in 2:33:27 , in Lac du Bonnet in 2:32,  placing 3rd in the 25-29 and finished the season of by placing 4th in his category at the Riding Mountain Duathlon. 

Long Course Athlete of the Year for 2002 

New award for 2002, which recognizes the top male and female triathletes who have shown excellence in long course competition. Must complete at least two races greater than the Olympic distance. 

Female

The Triathlon Manitoba Female Long course athlete of the Year for 2002:   Edie Fisher 

This lady is a tremendous athlete who continues to break records. Edie was the top female competitor at the Morden Half-Ironman Event where she qualified for Ironman Canada.  In Pentiction she was the top Manitoba finisher in 10:46:48, and broke the record for the age group, more than an hour ahead of the 2nd place finisher. 

Male

The Triathlon Manitoba Male Long course athlete of the Year for 2002: Darcey Harder 

Darcey raced both Olympic distance events and long course this season. He was the 2nd place male overall at the Morden ½ Ironman event, earning himself a spot to Ironman Canada.  At Ironman Canada, he finished the event in 10:47:29.  Overall this placed him 307 of 2000 competitors.

Youth Triathletes of the Year for 2002

This award recognizes excellence in competition at the Youth level. Must be 14 to 15 years old on 31 Dec. of competition year. 

Male

The Triathlon Manitoba Male Youth Triathlete of the Year for 2002: Colin McKinley 

Colin has been competing in triathlons for 5 seasons. He competed in 5 sprint distance races this season winning his category in each race in times that ranged from 1:25 to 1:35. Colin also represented Manitoba at Manitoba/Saskatchewan Youth Regionals at Riding Mountain. 

Female

The Triathlon Manitoba Female Youth Triathlete of the Year for 2002: Teresa Samek 

Teresa showed huge improvements from 2001 completing all of her sprint distance races between 1:15 and 1:20. She even performed better outside the Province winning, the Alberta Provincial Junior Championships, placing 2nd overall and 1st in her age category in a major race in Minneapolis that had over 300 female athletes entered and 5th at Duathlon Junior Nationals racing against athletes as much as 6 years older than her. 

Junior Triathlete of the Year for 2002

This award recognizes excellence in competition at the junior level. Athletes must be 16 to 19 years old on 31 Dec. of competition year. 

Male

The Triathlon Manitoba Male Junior Triathlete of the Year for 2002: Jacques Marcoux 

Jacques was undefeated in the 2002 racing season in the junior age category. His best time of the season was a 1:03:51. He placed 21st at Junior Nationals and was 4th place at Duathlon Junior Nationals. 

Female

The Triathlon Manitoba Female Junior Triathlete of the Year for 2002: Amy Briscoe 

This was an extremely difficult category to win since we have so many talented athletes in this category.  Amy had an excellent start to her season by winning her category at the Triple Threat and St Malo triathlons. She showed consistency of performance where she never finished more than a minute behind another junior athlete and was always in the top 2 finishers. She shone in the two biggest races of the season where she was top Manitoban placing 6th at Junior Nationals and winning the Junior elite race at Duathlon Nationals.   

Overall Grand Prix Series Winners for 2002

Grand Prix Series points are awarded to Triathlon Manitoba members at each of the six Olympic Distance triathlons (1500m swim, 40K bike, 10K run) and the Morden Half Ironman. An athlete's total race series points is sum of the race points from their 3 best races, and a minimum of 3 races are required. 

Male               

The Triathlon Manitoba Overall Male Grand Prix Series winner for 2002: Patrick Peacock 

Patrick had a busy summer racing.  He won the overall race in St Malo, Lac du Bonnet and Riding Mountain.  He also raced at the National Triathlon Championships in Edmonton and Duathlon Nationals in Calgary.  

Female                      

The Triathlon Manitoba Overall Female Grand Prix Series winner for 2002: Edie Fisher 

Edie got the year off to a positive start by winning the first two Grand Prix events on our race calendar, the Triple Threat race and St Malo.  She also won the Morden half-Ironman event.  Edie is a veteran in triathlon and has been the overall Grand Prix Series winner for over 8 years now. 

Triathlon Manitoba’s Triathletes of the Year for 2002

This award is for overall excellence at the highest level of Provincial, National and International competition. 

Male   

The Triathlon Manitoba Male Triathlete of the Year for 2002: Jeff Morier 

This athlete has been competing in Triathlons in Manitoba for over 10 years, and during that entire time has always been one of the most consistent athletes in the Province.  He had the fastest (non drafting) Standard distance Triathlon of the season going 2:00:31 at Pinawa. He was the top Manitoba finisher at Triathlon (Age Group) Nationals where he was 5th overall. During the season he also won the Triple Threat Triathlon and Pinawa Triathlons and placed 2nd at Lac Du Bonnet.  He has been training with the Manitoba National Triathlon Centre this past year and is a member of the Tribalistic Triathlon team. 

Female

The Triathlon Manitoba Female Triathlete of the Year for 2002: Edie Fisher 

This lady continues to dominate the women’s triathlon scene in Manitoba.  It is her 10th year as Triathlete of the Year.  Her performances this year were remarkable. Edie won the Morden Long Course event to qualify for Ironman Canada and then got on a plane to Edmonton and won her age group at the Canadian Championship the next day.  Later in the summer she went to Penticton to compete at the Canadian Ironman in this race Edie didn’t only win her age category but also broke the course record in her age group by over 30 minutes finishing in 10:46. On November 9th Edie will compete at the World Triathlon Championships where she we go after a 9th medal in Olympic Distance Competition. Edie also serves as a great role model to all the other team members of the Manitoba National Triathlon Centre and the Kenora Borealis Multisport Club of which she’s President, through her sharing of knowledge and allowing the team to use her home in Kenora for training camps and athlete development.     

Two new additions to the awards program for 2002 were Coach and Volunteer of the year awards. 

Coach of the Year

For the individual who has shown a dedication and commitment to coaching in Manitoba, best displayed through leadership and the development of Manitoba athletes. 

The Triathlon Manitoba Coach of the Year for 2002: Philippe Chabot

Philippe was the coach of the Triple Threat Triathlon Club in Winnipeg.   His efforts went above and beyond the expectations of the position.  His leadership improved team cohesiveness, participation rates at practises and improved performances of club members. 

Volunteer of the Year

For the individual who has shown a significant contribution and dedication to volunteerism in Manitoba. 

The Triathlon Manitoba Volunteer of the Year for 2002: Kevin Miller 

Along with a number of other volunteer activities, Kevin serves as a Director on the Triathlon Manitoba Board.  This past year he served as the Board Secretary, he chaired 2 committees (Timing & Results and Communications), and was a committee member in other areas.  He ensures the website is always up-to-date and that communication is maintained with the triathlon community via email updates.  His efforts and time commitment have been outstanding and he is very deserving of this award.  

A number of other awards were given out at the Annual Awards Evening. Sport Manitoba’s Order of Sport Excellence Awards were distributed as well as Triathlon Manitoba’s Series Age Group Awards for the Duathlon Series, the Sprint Series and the Grand Prix Series.  A complete list of all these award winners can be found on the website www.triathlon.mb.ca
