August 20, 2003 --- Riding Mountain Triathlon weekend results

The 18th annual Riding Mountain Triathlon took place in Wasagaming, Manitoba, on Saturday August 16th.  What a difference a year makes! Last year the horrible weather forced the event to be turned into a sprint duathlon due to safety concerns.  This year the water and air temperature was so warm that wetsuits were not allowed, a first in the race's history. This race was the final Grand Prix and Sprint series event for the 2003 season, in which 242 participants came out.

The overall male winner of the Olympic distance triathlon (1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run) was Patrick Peacock in a time of 2:03:41.  Patrick is a member of the Tribalistic Team and trains with the Manitoba National Triathlon Centre (MNTC).  Second place went to Allan Scott in 2:05:37. Following in third was Jeff Morier, Tribalistic/MNTC in 2:09:04.

The overall female winner was Erica Stechesen (MNTC), who has not lost an event this season, in 2:19:11.  Capturing second place was Edie Fisher, from the Kenora Borealis club in 2:20:28.  In third place was Charmaine Shannon from Namibia in 2:32:58.

In the Sprint distance event (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) the youth women, all from the Triple Threat Triathlon Team, and training with the MNTC, captured the three top spots.  Erin Braun took first in 1:11:54, Jenna Wilson followed in 1:13:52 and Amy Briscoe captured the final podium spot in 1:16:36.

On the men’s side, Jacques Marcoux (Tribalistic/MNTC) claimed another 1st place finish in 1:06:25.  Following very closely in second was Dan Morwood, of the Westman Triumphs, who cycled his way through the crowd to finish in 1:06:36.  Third place went to Chris Livingstone from the Tribalistic team in 1:13:52.

A new option to participants this year was a duathlon component, which featured a 5km run, 40km bike and 10km run.  Overall finishers were Christel Leclair in 2:43:37 and Ty Schmidt in 2:15:12.

There were twenty-four relay teams in this event, the highest relay participation event for the season.

On Sunday, 139 Kids of Steel and Try-a-tri participants took to the water to complete their triathlon events.  This event served as the Manitoba – Saskatchewan Regional Youth Championships, which saw the Manitoba team of youths win the Markham Cup.
