August 6, 2003 --- Essex Road Multi-Sport Day


The Kenora Borealis Triathlon Team hosted a successful day of triathlon events this past weekend on Essex road, just north of Kenora. The day of multi-sport racing offered an event for everyone in the family. The bike portion for all the events took place on a gravel road, which required mountain bikes. 

The day started with a Kids Of Steel race for ages 8 to 15, a 1500m open water swim and a 17 km “Go Like a Goat” run race. The Kids of Steel event had 33 participants. The winner in the Girls 8 to 11 category (100m swim, 5km bike, 1km run) was Christine Simpson with a time of 26:03.  Dale Kinley placed first in the Boys 8 to 11 category with a time of 28:00.  In the Girls 12&13 “Short” Category (200m swim, 10km bike, 2km run) the first place girl was Amelia Penner in 47:28, and the first place in the 12&13 “Short” boys category was Trevor Penner with a time of 52:06. The final distance offered, 12&13 “Long” and 14&15 “short” (300m swim, 15km bike, 3 km run) was won by Keith Mozdzen in 65:18, there were no female competitors in this distance. 

In the 1500m swim, race director Edie Fisher finished first in a time of 23:17, Kris Hildebrand finished second in 24:17 and Judith McLeod was third in 46:24. 

In the “Go Like a Goat” 17 km gravel road run, Wayne Klassen finished first in a time of 1:07:40, Liz Boutelle won the women’s side in a time of 1:24:28. 

In the afternoon, despite the rain, 74 participants completed the various events. Overall Female winners of the Sprint Distance Triathlon (750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run) were as follows: in first place was Erin Braun of the Triple Threat Triathlon Club in 1:15:13; Lynne Laporte captured second place in 1:16:42.  Third place went to Lynne Markham of Triple Threat in 1:24:11. 

On the men's side the Overall Male winner in the Sprint Distance Triathlon was Dave Lipchen of the Tribalistic Triathlon Club with the fastest time of the day in 1:02:38.  Following in second was Jared Spier of Tribalistic in 1:03:01.  Third place went to Marty Halprin, also of Tribalistic in 1:10:58.

In the Sprint Duathlon category (2.25 km run / 17 km bike / 4.5 km run) Kenora local Lorelei Van Belleghem claimed first place in 1:26:22.  JL Russell won the men’s side in 1:06:25. 

For the first time ever in Manitoba, an aquathon (750 m swim, 17 km bike, 1500 m swim) was held. Linda Markham of Triple Threat won the women’s side in 1:30:48. Linda’s husband Ralph Markham won the men’s side in 1:49:32.
