July 14, 2003 --- Morden Triathlon Weekend results
Dan Morwood and Carol Tickner win the Morden Half-Ironman Event
The 23rd
Morden International Triathlon took place on Saturday July 12th.
This is one of Canada's longest running triathlons and Manitoba’s only
Half-Ironman event. The event attracts participants from across Canada and the
United States. The race featured a variety of distances with total participation
numbers reaching 190 individuals.
The Half
Ironman race featured a 1.9 km swim, 90km bike, followed by a 21.1 km run.
This portion of the race was a qualifier for Ironman Canada with 10 spots
up for grabs and featured a $2000 prize purse for the top three overall male and
female winners of the Half Ironman Distance.
The
overall female winner was Carol Tickner from BC, in a time of 5:05:33. Following
in second was Janet Findlay of Kenora in 5:27:56.
Cherrie Fournier of Winnipeg finished in 5:28:47 to claim third place.
On the
men’s side Dan Morwood, repeated his 2002 victory, finishing in 4:33:21.
Right on his heels was Peter Courogen from Lake Oswego, Oregan, in
4:33:49. Third place went to Adlai Majer of Calgary in 4:49:03.
Both Peter and Adlai made the trip to Morden as a result of the Ironman
qualifying spots available.
The
remaining eight Ironman Canada spots were accepted by: Sharon Adamchuk (The Pas,
MB), Richard Boscher (Binscarth, MB), Barb Griffith (Keewatin, ON), Steve Hansen
(Wpg), Klaus Joachim (Wpg), Brenda Macgregor (Prince Albert, SK) Jon Peressini
(Calgary, AB), and Stacy Racher (Wpg).
The
second distance of the day was the Foilman race, which featured a 950 m swim,
30km bike, and 7.2km run. On the
women’s side, Michelle Barnet (Wpg) won the event in 2:01:03.
Karyn Kowal (BC) finished in 2:02:27, earning her the second position.
Third place went to Kate Okany (Wpg) in 2:07:09.
David
Matiece (Brandon) won the men’s Foilman event in 1:41:39.
Second place went to James Clements (Wpg), in 1:44:06.
Third place went to Hank Unrau (Morden) in 1:47:28.
The
third event of the day was a Duathlon (3.6k run/ 30k cycle / 7.2k run).
The overall male and female winners were Dale Kirk
(Wpg) in 1:35:10 and Coreena Lloyd in 2:01:21.
Special
thanks to first-time race director Deanna McMullen (owner of Morden’s FittWell
Centre) and her partner Trish Murdy (and their crew of dedicated volunteers) for
ensuring that the Morden International Triathlon would continue to be a
cornerstone of Triathlon Manitoba's Events Calendar, and that
the 23rd
MIT would be a success. Back
in March, this triathlon was at risk of cancellation before Deanna stepped
forward and accepted the challenge.
The next
race on the Triathlon Manitoba calendar is the Lac du Bonnet Triathlon on Sunday
July 27th. The Lac du
Bonnet Knights of Columbus, the Lac du Bonnet Water Ski Club and the Community
Centre are presenting the event. The event features a Olympic distance triathlon (1500m swim /
40k bike / 10k run), a Sprint distance race (750m swim / 20k bike / 5k run), and
a Try-a-tri (300m swim. 10k bike, 2.5 k run), as well as a duathlon (5k run /
40k bike / 10k run) and a sprint duathlon (2.5k run/20k bike / 5k run).
