July 8, 2003 --- Pinawa Weekend Results
The Pinnacle Triathlon Team hosted a successful two days of triathlon
events this past weekend in Pinawa. The weekend started with a Kids Of Steel
race for ages 8 to 15, which took place on Saturday July 5th. On
Sunday, race three of the Manitoba Grand Prix Series, the Pinawa Free Spirit
Triathlon and Duathlon, was held.
The Kids of Steel event on Saturday had 65 participants. The winner in
the Girls 8 - 11 category (100m swim, 5km bike, 1km run) was Meghan Conrad with
a time of 23:04. Ryan Smith placed
first in the Boys 8-11 category with a time of 20:55. In the Girls 12&13 “Short” Category (200m swim, 10km
bike, 2km run) the first place girl was Kaylyn Taylor in 38:47, and the first
place in the 12&13 “Short” boys category was Romeo Zapata with a time of
35:32. The final distance offered, 12&13 “Long” and 14&15 “Short”
(300m swim, 15km bike, 3 km run) were won by Sarah Anne Brault in 47:52 for the
girls and Casey Gergely for the boys’ side in 50:02.
On Sunday 165 participants faced a wide range of weather conditions
including: pouring rain, wind, humidity and even sun. Overall Female winners of
the Standard Distance (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) were as follows: in first
place was Cherrie Fournier of the Tribalistic Triathlon Club in 2:29:34; Melanie
Leclair of Tribalistic captured second place in 2:32:10.
Third place went to Lynne Markham in 2:39:44.
On the men's side, the Overall Male winner in the Standard Distance was
Jeff Morier of the Tribalistic Triathlon Club with the fastest time of the day
in 2:05:10. Following in second was
Jared Spier of Tribalistic in 2:10:14. Third
place went to Dave Lipchen, also of Tribalistic in 2:10:50.
In the Sprint Distance category (750 m swim / 20k bike / 5k run) the Province's
top two women battled for first place. Erica Stechesen claimed first place by outrunning Edie Fisher
on the run, to finish in 1:06:24. Fisher
of Kenora in came in very closely behind in 1:06:39. Following in third was
youth athlete Erin Braun, of the Triple Threat Triathlon Club, in 1:08:23.
On the male side, Jeff Hehn had the fastest time of the day with his
time of 1:02:12. Second placed went
to Jacques Marcoux, of Tribalistic, in 1:03:00.
Third was Josh Markham, of the Triple Threat Triathlon Club, in 1:04:03.
In the Duathlon event (5km run / 40km cycle / 10km run), the top placing
male was Dale Kirk of Tribalistic in 2:08:31. Following in second was Laurent Lacroix in 2:25:42.
Third place went to Kevin Miller of Triple Threat in 2:25:51
