Peacock and Stechesen win their 2nd Consecutive Grand Prix Series Event 

The 8th Annual St. Malo Multi Sport Weekend was held this past weekend, June 21st and June 22nd, at St. Malo Provincial Park hosted by the Tribalistic Triathlon Team.  

The Kids of Steel event for children ages 8 to 15 years was held on the Saturday with 126 participants taking part in the variety of distances offered.  The overall Try-a-Tri winners, a beginner distance for adults consisting of a 300m swim, 15km bike, and 3km run, were Tobi Bacon on the women’s side with a time of 59:13, and Jim Nadler on the men’s side in 56:59. 

On Sunday, a record 250 participants turned out to take part in the six different events offered.  Overall Olympic distance (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) winners Patrick Peacock and Erica Stechesen had blazing fast times, setting new course records.  Both athletes train with the Manitoba National Triathlon Centre (MNTC). 

Stechesen continues her winning streak this season, placing first in 2:10:27.  Following in second place was 2002 winner Edie Fisher, of the Kenora Borealis Club, in 2:11:28.  Third place went to Lynne Laporte in 2:22:24.   

Peacock won the men’s event for the fifth consecutive year in a record time of 1:54:03. Following in second was Jeff Morier (MNTC) in 1:57:27. Third place went to Dave Lipchen in 2:03:50.  All three of these athletes are members of the Tribalistic team, who hosted the event. 

In the Sprint Distance category (750 m swim / 20k bike / 5k run) the youth women from the Triple Threat Club swept the category. The first across the line was Jenna Wilson in 1:08:24.  Second place went to Amy Briscoe in 1:09:37.  Following in third was Teresa Samek in 1:10:39. All three of these girls are currently training with the MNTC. 

The youth athletes claimed all top three spots on the male side as well.  Tribalistic member, Jacques Marcoux (MNTC) repeated his 2002 victory in a time of 1:01:09.  Second place went to Willie Bell with a time of 1:04:48.  Josh Markham (Triple Threat Club / MNTC) took third place in 1:05:16.  

In the Long Duathlon event, which consisted of a 5k run, 40k bike, 10k run, Ty Schmidt and Jackie Beckta were the overall winners.  

The overall Sprint Duathlon (2.5km run, 20km bike, 5km run) winners were Becky Groening and Greg Bizruchak.  

The next race on the Triathlon Calendar is the Pinawa Kids Of Steel on July 5th and Free Spirit Triathlon and Duathlon in Pinawa, Manitoba on Sunday July 6th, 2003.
