June 9, 2003 --- Triple Threat Triathlon & Duathlon results

The Triple Threat Triathlon & Duathlon was held yesterday, June 8th at Birds Hill Provincial Park hosted by the Triple Threat Triathlon Club.  This race was the first triathlon of the season for the 159 adults/youths who participated in this Grand Prix and Sprint series event.

Erica Stechesen, fresh off winning the USA Midwest Duathlon Championships the previous week, was the overall female winner of the Olympic Distance event (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) with a time of 2:15:49. Erica trains with the Manitoba-National Triathlon Centre (MNTC).  Last year’s winner, Edie Fisher from the Kenora Borealis club, was second in 2:19:13.  Third place went to Cherrie Fournier, from the Tribalistic Triathlon Team in 2:25:09.

The men’s Olympic distance event was exciting to watch, as the top three overall males each led a portion of the event.  Kevin Breiter (MNTC/Triple Threat) came out of the water with almost a full minute's lead over the next competitor.  Breiter maintained his lead for the first lap of the bike, before being overtaken by Allan Scott who came off the cycle first with Patrick Peacock (MNTC/Tribalistic) right on his heels. Peacock took the lead and held it on the run. Both Peacock and Scott delivered sub 2 hour performances with times of 1:59:13 and 1:59:45 respectively.  Breiter took third place in 2:04:40.

In the Sprint Distance category (750m swim / 20k bike / 5k run) the junior women swept the event.  Erin Braun led from start to finish with a time of 1:10:36.  Second across the line was Jenna Wilson, who cycled her way from eighth up to third, and then delivered the fastest run to finish in 1:11:00.  Amy Briscoe secured third in 1:12:21.  All three of these athletes train with the MNTC and are members of the Triple Threat Triathlon Club.

On the male side, Jacques Marcoux (MNTC/Tribalistic), who won the 2002 event, repeated his win, claiming top honors in a time of 1:04:21.  Second placed went to newcomer Chris Graham, in 1:08:19.  Behind him in third was Myles Tycholis in 1:09:50.

A duathlon distance was also offered to participants with a 5k run, 40k bike and 10k run.  The first place finisher was Ray Papineau in 2:25:54.  Second place went to Perry Kasprick in 2:30:59, and Dan Manaigre took third in 2:41:14.

The previous day, Saturday June 7th the Manitoba Schools Triathlon Championships/Kids of Steel event went on with 130 participants racing in the event that was also put on by the Triple Threat Club.

Shamrock School retained their title as Manitoba Early Years Champion, while students at Ecole Christine-Lesperance won the Middle Years category.

The next race on the Triathlon Events Calendar is a weekend of races in St Malo on June 21/22nd. The weekend has events for everyone from Kids of Steel, to novice athletes with a shorter Try-a-tri distance, Sprint, Olympic, Duathlon and Master Swim categories.
