July 21, 2004 --- Morden Triathlon weekend results
The 24th Morden International
Triathlon took place this past weekend. This event is one of Canada's longest
running triathlons. This fourth race of the Grand Prix Series featured a variety
of distances with total participation numbers reaching 187 individuals.
The Half Ironman race featured a 1.9 km
swim, 90 km bike, followed by a 21.1 km run.
This portion of the race was a qualifier for Ironman Canada with 10 spots
up for grabs, and featured a prize purse for the top two male and top two female
winners of the Half Ironman Distance.
The overall female winner was Edie Fisher in
a time of 4:56:17, who beat her own course record set in 2000. Following in second was Janet Findlay in 5:14:21. Shelley
MacKenzie finished in 5:34:55 to claim third place.
On the men’s side Patrick Peacock,
competing in his first Half Ironman event, claimed first place in 4:24:03. In
second was Dan Morwood, Triathlon Manitoba's 2003 long course athlete of the
year, in 4:30:49. Third place went to Richard Boscher in 4:52:01.
Athletes from across Canada and the U.S.
came to compete and to secure spots for the 2004 Ironman Canada event. The 10
qualifying spots went to: Martin Krowina, Greg Dyck, Evan Nitschmann, Ryan
Leibel, Paul Dunderland, Jeff Reichert, Stig Hansen, Tim Matthews, Paul Rogan,
Christine van der Hoek.
The second distance of the day was the
Foilman race, which featured a 950 m swim, 30 km bike, and 7.2 km run. On the women’s side Kimberly Mcdonald won the event in a
course record time of 1:47:43. Melanie Leclair finished
in 1:53:37 earning her the second position. Seconds later athlete Kerri Earl
placed third, with a time of 1:53:57.
Jared Spier won the men’s Foilman event in
1:29:45. Second place went to James Clements in 1:38:24. In third was Myles
Tycholis in 1:39:04.
The third event of the day was a Duathlon
(3.6 km run, 30 km cycle, 7.2 km run). The overall male finisher was Steve
Gajerski in 1:45:27. The overall female was Christel Leclair in 1:57:15.
On the Sunday, the Kids of Steel event ran
with 86 kids, and shortly after, a Try-a-Tri distance featuring a short 300 m
swim, 15 km bike and 3 km run was held with 19 participants.
