July 28, 2004 --- 10 Triathletes heading East to compete

Manitoba is sending a team of 10 athletes out to Caledon, Ontario to represent the province at the Campbell’s Ignite -  Caledon Continental Cup Triathlon Festival on Saturday July 31st .

This race, which features multiple events, is serving as the 2004 Canadian Junior Triathlon Championships.  Manitobans competing in the Junior Championships are:

The Sprint drafting event (750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run) will be exciting for our juniors, as the competitive field is deep. The event is also playing host to the first Canada/USA Junior Challenge.  The top three finishers from each country will be used to determine the winner of the challenge. Additionally, it is part of Triathlon Canada’s Kids of Steel® Series, which kicked off in Manitoba in June.  So the athletes will be earning points towards the series, with this Championship race providing a heavier weighting.

In the 14-15 category (500m swim, 15km cycle, 4km run), which is part of the National Kids of Steel® Series and is acting as the Eastern Kids of Steel® Championships, two of Manitoba’s up and coming triathletes will be taking part.

In addition, the race features an age group component, which will be a qualifying race for the 2005 World Triathlon Championships in Hawaii.   Two of Manitoba top male competitors will compete in this Olympic distance event (1500m swim, 40km cycle, 10km run).

Good luck to all athletes as they represent Manitoba in Caledon.
