June 8, 2004 --- First big triathlon weekend of the season!


The first big triathlon weekend of the season is in full swing this coming weekend, with events taking place across the province.  

On Saturday June 12th, the Triple Threat Kids of Steel® and Try-a-Tri will be held at Birds Hill Park East Beach.  This event is also the Winnipeg regional qualifying event for the MTS Manitoba Summer Games. The waves of races start at 9:00 AM. There are distances offered for youth's ages 6 to 19 and the Try-a-tri (300m swim/15 km cycle / 3 km run) is for beginner adults. 

On Sunday June 13th, the Triple Threat Triathlon, which is race #1 of Triathlon Manitoba's Grand Prix Series, will be held at Birds Hill Park East Beach.  The Olympic Distance Triathlon (1500m swim / 40km cycle / 10km run)  & Duathlon (5km run / 40km cycle / 10km run) start at 8:00 AM, with the Sprint Distance Triathlon (750m swim / 20km cycle / 5km run) starting at 8:05 AM. 

The 2004 MTS Manitoba Summer Games are in Dauphin from August 11th to 15th, and triathlon is one of the 12 sports. Athletes aged 11 to 19 from throughout the province will compete in regional qualifying events, with the top two males and females from each age category moving on to the Games.   

This weekend, in addition to the Winnipeg qualifier, athletes in Central and Westman region can try to qualify for their respective regional triathlon team. 

MB Games Central Qualifier, Saturday June 12th, 10 am start, in Carman 

MB Games Westman Qualifier, Sunday June 13th, 11am start in Birtle

Up in the Northern part of the province on Sunday June 13th, Flin Flon will be hosting a Kids of Steel® event & Try-a-tri for adults.  The event will feature 3 different distances for athletes.
