June 11, 2005 --- Pinawa Free Spirit Triathlon and Duathlon
Pinawa,
the hot spot in Manitoba yesterday, was the site of a weekend of triathlon
events. On
Saturday July 9th, a Kids of Steel race was staged, and Sunday followed
with the Pinawa Free Spirit Triathlon and Duathlon for adults.
Both events were organized by the local Pinnacle Triathlon Club.
The Kids
of Steel event on Saturday had 94 kids out to compete in the warm sun with a
choice of 5 distances from young tykes & trikes up to 15 years.
On
Sunday, 150 participants took part in the day’s events. Overall Female winners
of the Olympic Distance (1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run) were as follows: in
first place was Edie Fisher in 2:16:54; Edie has won all three Grand Prix events
to date. Janet Findlay captured second place in 2:20:38.
Edie and Janet are both members of the Kenora Borealis Club.
Third went to Melanie Leclair, Tribalistic, in 2:24:34.
On the
men's side the Overall Male winner in the Olympic Distance was Patrick Peacock
with the fastest time of the day in 2:02:53.
Following in second was Chris Graham in 2:10:34.
Third place went to Scott Taylor in 2:12:03.
All three men are members of the Tribalistic Triathlon Team.
In the
Sprint Distance category (750 m swim / 20k bike / 5k run), the Tribalistic women
swept the podium positions.
The first woman across the line was Bethany Pechey in 1:12:45. Second
place went to Kimberley Macdonald; in 1:14:22, following in third was Kate Okany
in 1:15:04.
On the
male side, Dave Lipchen, Tribalistic, won the race in a time of 1:05:31, this
was the fastest time in the Sprint Category.
Second place went to Caine Gilholm in 1:05:53.
Chris Livingstone, another Tribe member, took third place in 1:06:20.
In
the duathlon event (5km run / 40km cycle / 10km run), the top placing male this
year was Kevin Miller, Triple Threat Triathlon Team in 2:27:14.
The top female duathlete was Pinawa local and Pinnacle club member, Jane
MacMillan in 2:57:05.
