June 22, 2005 --- Manitobans medal at the Canadian Duathlon Championships
Manitoba
athletes had a very strong showing at the Canadian Duathlon Championships in
Ottawa, Ontario this past weekend.
In
the junior event, Manitoba claimed gold on both the men’s and women’s side.
Blair Peters, racing his first season as a junior, finished first in very
fast time of 57:28. He was followed
closely by Manitoba National Triathlon Centre (MNTC) teammate, Willie Bell, who
claimed bronze in 57:46.
On
the female side, Amy Briscoe place 1st out of 6 athletes finishing
with a time of 1:06. This is the
fifth year in a row an MNTC junior female has won this category. This is Amy’s
third time as the Junior female duathlon champion, having won two consecutive
years in 2001 and 2002. The
junior categories completed an event consisting of a 5 km run followed by a 20
km bike and 2.5 km run.
In
the Under 23 event, where the athletes completed a 10km run, 40km cycle, and 5km
run, Jacques Marcoux placed 6th in the U23 event and 13th
overall on the elite men’s side. While
in the female category while in the U23 female elite, Erin Braun placed 1st, and
5/6 overall. Both Jacques and Erin
train with the MNTC.
In
the 30-34 age group category, Dan Morwood, of Kenora, placed 1st in
his category and an impressive 2nd overall in the event with a time of 1:56:28.
Finishing a strong second in that same age group was Jared Spier,
Tribalistic team, with a time of 1:59:43 to also give him 6th placing
overall out of 146 athletes.
The
following day in Victoria, BC, the Canadian Long Course Triathlon Championships
took place. Patrick Peacock,
Tribalistic club, placed 13th overall and 6th in his 30-34 division.
Patrick who is just coming back after suffering a shoulder injury, finished with
an impressive time of 4:25:20. Fellow Manitoban and clubmate, Sean Cheop also
attended the race and finished 56th with a time of 4:52:42. There were a total
of 337 athletes competing at this race.
