July 7, 2006 --- Manitoba Juniors heading to compete in Edmonton
Manitoba
National Triathlon Centre Coach Gary Pallet is taking a strong contingent of
five junior athletes to Edmonton, Alberta to compete in the Junior National
Triathlon Championships being held on Sunday, July 9th, 2006.
Two
Manitoba males competing in Edmonton are Blair Peters and Willie Bell.
Peters, who won in St. Malo during the first stop of the National Series,
will be trying to continue his successful racing in Edmonton.
He will be facing some tough competition from Andrew Woegerer from
Ontario and Andrew McCartney from B.C.
Willie
Bell will try to improve on his 4th place results from St. Malo.
He will attempt to break through the pack and tight groups that have
become characteristic in the final run stage of the event.
Three
Manitoba Junior females who are competing are Sarah-Anne Brault, Stevie Moore,
and Katie Wray. Moore and Wray, who
both raced in St. Malo, will attempt to improve on their finishes and gain
valuable national competition experience at their first junior championships.
Sarah-Anne
Brault is being touted as an athlete who has a chance of catching last year’s
2005 Junior Triathlon Champion Kirsten Sweetland, who has been dominant in the
Junior category for the last two years. Brault
finished second to Sweetland earlier this year at the Canadian Duathlon
Championships by just seconds. Known
for her talent as a strong runner, Triathlon Canada’s High Performance
Director Tom Patrick, comments “from a junior female triathlete perspective,
Sarah-Anne is an international level runner.”
An
additional feature to the Edmonton event is the Canadian/USA Junior Challenge
where the top three finishes from each country will determine winner of the male
and the female challenge. Last year, Canada won the female challenge but the USA
males upset Canada on the strength of Steven Duplinsky, who won the race. This
event should be loaded with talent as the USA will be bringing their top junior
triathletes to Edmonton.
The
winners in the Junior category will represent Canada at the 2006 World Triathlon
Championships, which take place on Sept 2nd in Lausanne, Switzerland.
