June 28, 2006 --- Elite Athletes and Weekend Warriors Descend on St Malo!


Sunny skies and heat greeted athletes participating in the 11th annual St. Malo Multisport Weekend.  Fifty-one Junior and U23 athletes arrived in Manitoba for the first of five National Junior and U23 Development Series events.  The St. Malo Multisport Weekend was the first event in the National Series featuring a sprint distance triathlon (750m Swim, 20km Cycle, 5km run), with Junior and U23 athletes racing together.  This year, athletes in each category could compete for awards totalling up to $3000.  In addition, St. Malo acted as a qualifying race for the World University Triathlon Championship Team (FISU).  For the Junior athletes competing at St. Malo, this event served as a qualifying race for the 2006 World Championships in Luasanne, Switzerland. 

Kristen Sweetland took a commanding lead in the swim exiting almost one minute before any other competitors got out of the water.  She kept the lead for the rest of the race finishing in first at 1:01:57.  In second place, fellow British Columbian Elspeth McGregor finished in 1:03:29.  Rounding off the U23 podium was Manitoban and MNTC athlete Erin Braun in 1:06:28. 

In the female Junior category, Albertan Paula Findlay took first place with 1:04:19.  Finishing second was Quebecer Marianne Hogan in a time of 1:05:05.  Rounding off the female podium was Rachel O’Reilly from Ontario in a time of 1:05:14. 

In the male U23 category, fellow Manitoban and MNTC athlete, Jacques Marcoux placed first in a time of 1:01:29.  Following in second was Ontarian Tim McClure in a time of 1:02:53.  Rounding off the U23 podium was Albertan Jordan Sykes in a time of 1:04:04. 

Manitoban and MNTC athlete Blair Peters was the overall male winner and also doubled as winner in the Junior category.  His time was a commanding 57:45.  Finishing in 2nd place was Andrew McCartney in a time of 58:43.  Rounding off the Junior category podium was Ontarian Andrew Woegerer in a time of 58:47.  Right in the pack with the podium finishers was MNTC athlete Willie Bell finishing fourth in a time of 58:49. 

The National Series moves to Brampton, Ontario on July. 2nd for U23 Nationals and continues the rest of the summer throughout Canada. 

The provincial categories in the 11th annual event hosted by the Tribalistic Triathlon team featured an Olympic and Sprint distance triathlon and a duathlon.  In the Olympic triathlon (1500m Swim, 40km Bike, and 10km run), the overall winners were Edie Fisher from Kenora Borealis and Jeff Morier from Tribalistic Triathlon team. 

Edie Fisher won the female Olympic category in a time of 2:15:53.  Finishing in second was Erica Stechesen, in a time of 2:19:45.  Rounding off the category podium was Janet Findlay from Kenora, in a time of 2:24:34. 

Jeff Morier won the male Olympic category in a time of 2:02:45.  Close behind was Dan Morwood from Kenora in a time of 2:03:45.  Completing the category podium was Allan Scott, finishing in a time of 2:05:54. 

The overall Sprint triathlon (750m Swim, 20km Bike, and 5km Run) winners were Kimberly Macdonald from Triple Threat Triathlon Club and Francois Legoupil from Tribalistic Triathlon team. 

Kim Macdonald won the Sprint Triathlon in a time of 1:16:27.  Finishing in 2nd was Kate Okany from Triple Threat Triathlon team, in a time of 1:18:54.  Rounding off the female sprint podium was Dayna Hyde from Tribalistic finishing in a time of 1:19:29. 

The male Sprint Triathlon featured an exciting race with all three podium placers finishing within forty seconds of each other.  Francois Legoupil finished in 1st place in the Sprint Triathlon with a time of 1:10:24.  Nipping on his heels was Jim Sandor in a time of 1:10:39.  Rounding of the male sprint podium was Rod Sviestrup with a time of 1:10:52. 

In the Sprint Duathlon (2.5k Run, 20km Bike, and 5k Run) the overall winners were Triple Threat’s Anita Miller in a time of 1:27:34 and Hans Epp in a time of 1:09:15. 

The next event on the Triathlon Manitoba calendar is the “Tri in the Park” on Sunday, July. 2nd at Kildonan Park!  Pre-registration ends July 1st and same day registration begins at 7:30 AM.
