Race Management Committee -- Provincial Championships & Race Series: 2009 AGM Report

by Kevin Miller

Triathlon Manitoba has four season-long race series (Olympic Triathlon, Sprint Triathlon, Long Duathlon, and Sprint Duathlon), in addition to a four-evening Birds Hill Duathlon Series in May and our seven (in 2009) Kids of Steel® Series events. The Olympic Triathlon series is known as the Grand Prix Series, but that term is often also applied to the five (in 2009) events that deliver the season-long race series.

Race series points are awarded to Triathlon Manitoba members at each race based on the order of finish within each age/gender category. Series champions are recognized at our Annual Awards Evening with a certificate and prize, and they also receive a Provincial Champion Sport Excellence Award (PDF) certificate from Sport Manitoba.

In 2009, attendance at our Grand Prix Series events was good. It was up a bit from 2008, but attendance is still generally on the plateau it's been on since 2002, which was the last of 5 years of explosive growth near the turn of the millennium. The sprint events continue to have many more participants than Olympic Triathlon (which continues to lack competition in the youngest and older age categories, and many of the female categories), and Long Duathlon (which now has virtually no participation as Sprint Duathlon continues to grow).
